How to Remove the LBLD Motor from Your Simple Pump – Step-by-Step Guide

Removing the Linear Bearing Link Drive (LBLD) motor from your Simple Pump is an essential skill for maintenance, troubleshooting, or uninstalling motorization from your pump. Steve Schmid from Simple Pump Company provides a clear and practical method to do this, applicable to both the weather-resistant (WR) and standard versions of the LBLD motor.
Tools and Tips You’ll Need
- Crescent Wrenches (2): For disconnecting the rod extension from the standard pump rod.
- 5/16” Allen Wrench: To loosen the clevis bolts on the LBLD.
- 3/16” Allen Wrench and Ratchet: To remove the quarter 20 bolts that hold the drive plate.
- 9/64” Allen Wrench: To remove the smaller bolts securing the motor cover.
- Safety Tip: Always disconnect power before starting to ensure your safety. Even though the dry switch is off, it’s best practice to make sure there is no electricity powering the system.
Step 1: Prepare and Remove the Motor Cover
- Disconnect the power supply to the pump system to avoid accidental injury or electrical hazards.
- Using the 9/64” Allen wrench, remove the six bolts securing the LBLD motor cover.
- Carefully lift and set aside the cover to expose the motor drive components.
Step 2: Loosen the Clevis Bolts
- Locate the clevis bolts on the LBLD motor (use the 5/16” Allen wrench).
- Loosen these bolts sufficiently to allow movement but do not fully remove them yet. This step frees the motor to spin freely and lets you lift it off the pump head assembly later.
Step 3: Remove the Motor Drive Bolts
- Use the 3/16” Allen wrench and ratchet to remove the four quarter 20 bolts securing the drive to the pump head assembly.
- After removing these bolts, loosen any remaining attachments slightly to prevent binding during removal.
Step 4: Detach the LBLD Motor from the Pump Head
- Gently lift the motor assembly straight up off the pump head. If it feels stuck, gently jiggle the clevis to release any binding.
- Set the motor assembly safely aside for storage or further maintenance.
Step 5: Remove the Pump Rod Extension
- Identify the pump rod extension, which uses left-hand threads. This means to loosen it, turn clockwise as if tightening.
- Using the crescent wrenches, carefully unscrew and remove the rod extension from the standard pump rod.
Final Notes
Once you complete these steps, your Simple Pump has been fully disassembled from the LBLD motor drive and is restored to the manual pump head assembly. From here, you can proceed with further maintenance, uninstallation, or replacement of components as needed.
