Will a Simple Pump Fit in My Well? Here’s What You Need to Know
One of the most common questions we get at Simple Pump is: “Will a hand pump fit in my well?” It’s a great question—and the answer is: in most cases, yes.
Let’s walk through what you need to know about well compatibility with the Simple Pump Deep Well Hand Pump.
Shared Space: Electric Pump + Hand Pump
Many wells already have a submersible electric pump. If your electric pump’s discharge pipe exits through the top of the well cap and not through a pitless adapter, you likely have room for a Simple Pump to fit right alongside it. That’s because our system is designed to share the space in your well casing without interfering with your existing pump.
If you have:
- A 6” well casing (which is common), and
- An inch and a quarter submersible pipe,
You’re in great shape. Even with the coupling, there’s usually plenty of room left for our hand pump cylinder and rod system to operate alongside the submersible.
What If I Have a 4” Casing?
Good news! We install in 4” wells every day—as long as the submersible pipe inside is 1-1/4” or smaller. It’s a tighter fit, but still completely doable.
What If My Casing Is Smaller Than 4”?
This is where it gets tricky. If your well casing is 3” or 2” and already has an electric pump inside, then a Simple Pump hand pump will likely not fit alongside it.
However, you may still have options if:
- Your static water level is very shallow, and
- We can connect to your system above ground and use suction instead.
Let us evaluate your well—there may be a way to use a suction pump configuration depending on your setup.
The Pumps Don’t Interfere With Each Other
It’s important to know that a Simple Pump hand pump is a completely independent system from your electric pump. They don’t share any internal components, and they don’t impact each other’s operation.
So even when installed side-by-side, both can operate independently—ensuring you have manual access to water even when the power is out.
Still Not Sure?
If your well casing is smaller, your setup looks unique, or you just want peace of mind, give us a call. We’ll walk you through your specific setup, take a look at any pictures you have, and let you know what’s possible.
